Victorianna and the Dalles

Day 3

The Columbia River Gorge is an amazing ride. There were very few boats in the river. We took a side trip to Multnomah Falls.

The beautiful view from the bridge

The ride to the falls is wonderful. Lots of green, lush plants, shade, very peaceful. Multnomah Falls plummets 620 feet from its source on Larch Mountain. It is the second biggest falls in the US. Next time we stop here we will take the hike to the top. On the way back to the main road we passed another beautiful waterfall called Horsetail Falls.

As you travel down the Columbia Gorge you eventually run into a place called The Dalles.
The Dalles is a city, but it is also a French word, dalle, meaning flagstone, and was used to describe the columnar basalt carved by the Columbia River. Quite an interesting area. The columns of rock are all quite unique and very beautiful.

Last night at dinner, amid the laughing, drinking, and eating, Doris told a funny story about the trip she and John took to Arizona. They were staying in a motel and John had parked his bike as close to their room as possible. By the way, they were staying in Goleta, home to the thousands of adult children who are registered at UC Santa Barbara, but are really majoring in getting high and drunk. So, at some point John hears a couple of guys talking outside by his bike. He sneaks up to the window to listen to them, hoping they are not hurting his bike. John actually does an excellent imitation of a young drunk guy. So, they are slurring their words, talking about bikes and one says he has never seen a bike like John's. The other says he knows all the bikes and this one is a "Victorianna!" John rides a Victory. According to Doris, John crept back to  bed muttering about his baby being called a girls name.

So this morning George, who has been out since 6:00 packing the bike, rushes into the room shutting the door soundly behind him. We were given two giant keys to gain entry. Because it was still dark outside, George could not see the room number on the key. He said he could not figure out our room and he used the key and went into someone else's  room!!!  He heard moaning from the bed and hurried out. He told the story to Doris and John and we are still laughing. Doris said she wondered if the couple would be at breakfast and one would ask the other, "So, did you hear anything this morning, or see a big guy in our room?"

Today was a long day.  We rode forever and I had to take some Benedryl to counteract an issue I was having with my head. I mistakenly took two pills and was totally knocked out by the time we hit our room. I think I am getting too old to do this. Sitting on a beach in Hawaii sounds so good.

We passed a turnoff for Starvation Creek. Apparently it is so named because there was a train wreck there and the passengers had to dig their way out. No one was eaten.

There are no guest bloggers today. We were on the bike so much, I did not have time to make any new friends.

Tomorrow, Butte, Montana

Good night Walla Walla

  1. Maybe he walked in on John and Doris. Say the word and Hawaii awaits.
